Video: Kato N scale Broadway Limited

Watch the entire 15-car train led by a Kato GG1
Published: January 29, 2009
Model Railroader Associate Editor Dana Kawala runs the Kato N scale Broadway Limited around Managing Editor David Popp's Naugatuck layout. The Kato GG1 easily pulled the entire 15-car train.

It's a great loco and a great passenger car set and I own both.

However, why would anyone consider owning a model GG1 in any sclae, or much less running one on a catenary-less layout? It's like having a vinatge '67 396 SS Chevy with no fuel tank.

I grew up in Metuchen, NJ and was mezmerized everytime a saw a G go screaming by at 80 MPH under wires on that 4 track main. Nothing in North American railroading even comes close (IMHO)!

At N scale the general appearance of the model was impressive. The constant low speed performance was equally so. The lighting in the video not at all impressive. Engine and car details were lacking due to camera position and lighting. Let's redo it so we can have a clearer look at details. Some times theatrical lighting fails to reveal the things we most want to see.
Best regards,

I agree with much of the commentary above. I've seen this GG-1 and train on a local NTrak layout and could hardly bear to leave the display. I've loved the big Gs since I was a toddler traveling from NY to Broad Street, Philadelphia, where one could stand in worshipful awe in front of the very deity herself. The car descriptions on the video were fine, but low lighting on a Brunswick green loco and Tuscan red cars did not serve the viewers' needs.

A marvelous idea in bringing a product review to David's layout - everything looked and appeared to run great. I agree with RC Lopez of Illinois - what is the name of that ritzy background music, who performed it - is their CD available?

I loved the review of not only the engine but of the consist too. I would have to say that was one of best product review videos that I have seen from Model Railroader. The adding of the notes at the bottom of the screen added to the review. Hope to see more if it in the future. One note when using David's layout a little more light is needed.
