Walthers announces HO scale Metroliner

The Metroliner will be the first all-new HO scale model train in the WalthersProto series
Published: May 9, 2012
On May 9, 2012, model railroad manufacturer Wm. K. Walthers announced its first all-new WalthersProto release in HO Scale, the Metroliner Electric Multiple Unit (EMU). Prototype Metroliner trains were developed specifically for the Northeast Corridor and regularly ran at speeds of more than 100 mph. Based on the Metroliner trains that operated from 1968 to 1995, the Walthers models include the coach, snack bar coach, and parlor. Each car features a simulated stainless-steel finish and the Amtrak Phase 1 paint scheme. Powered by a skew-wound motor driving a single helical geared power truck in each unit, the cars will be offered with a dual-mode SoundTraxx Digital Command Control (DCC) sound decoder, or as DC (no sound) models. Other features include spring-loaded General Electric or Westinghouse pantographs, factory-installed grab irons, window tinting, and Proto MAX metal knuckle couplers.

A Deluxe Edition, four-car Metroliner model train set will also be available while supplies last, with production strictly limited to 350 four-car train sets. Models for this release are factory finished in Pennsylvania RR paint and lettering, which was used on prototype cars delivered for testing just before the Penn Central merger was approved. The Deluxe Edition consists of four cars (two coaches, a parlor, and a snack bar coach) with factory-installed LED lighting and a set of Preiser EST team engineer figures inside. Sold only as a four-car set (each car ships individually in the same month as the standard version). Deluxe Edition cars will not be sold separately.

The first of the Walthers HO scale Amtrak phase 1 Metroliner cars are planned to start shipping in February 2013. The DC only models will sell for $169.98 each. The DCC sound versions will sell for $259.98 each. The limited-run Deluxe Edition PRR four-car set will sell for $1,199.92.

Agreed, four car set is expensive

I don't think I have heard of it before the announcement. I wonder how many were requesting it. $1200 for a four car set seems pretty steep, even for a limited edition, I hope they read their market right.

It's cool that Walthers is making some models of rare things, but I wish that they would make more things of the L&N

Now that is a model that is long overdue. I remember riding on the Metroliner back in the 70's. Walthers is truly the standard when it come to passgener equipment.
