Photo by Malcolm Furlow Model Railroader magazine has pledged $10,000 to help support the National Model Railroad Association’s planned “Magic Of Scale Model Railroading” exhibit at the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento, Calif. A substantial portion of this pledge will fund the construction of a display case for the HOn3 San Juan Central, a Model Railroader project railroad built by Malcolm Furlow. Construction and operation of the layout were featured in the magazine during 1983 and 1984. Charlie Getz, president of the NMRA, will donate the layout, which is currently in his collection.
"The San Juan Central is one of our best-known project railroads, and we’re pleased to be able to ensure that it will be enjoyed for generations to come,” said Terry Thompson, publisher of MR. “This exhibit will present the hobby to the public in one of the most appealing environments possible – an actual roundhouse – and all of us at MR are happy to be part of it.” Model Railroader will also assist the NMRA with the exhibit by furnishing archival images and other materials.
“On behalf of the NMRA, I thank MR and Kalmbach Publishing for this most generous gift,” said Getz. “I’m extremely pleased that the San Juan Central will continue to inspire and be enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.”
